Webinar IV: Personal Data Processing within Immersive Virtual Worlds: Compliance Challenges of the GDPR.

Tuesday 31st October 2023 the Chair for the responsible development of the Metaverse celebrated the Webinar on “Personal Data Processing within Immersive Virtual Worlds: Compliance Challenges of the GDPR”. In this amazing session,  Vagelis PAPAKONSTANTINOU (Professor at VUB, Vrije Universiteit Brussel) and Pablo TRIGO KRAMCSÁC (Doctoral Researcher at VUB) told us about the most important conclusions from their paper about critical personal data protection issues arising in the dynamic, immersive, interactive and ever-expanding context of metaverse digital landscapes.  Some of the specific questions discussed in the webinar were about:

  • Metaverse Data Processing Essentials: Understanding the Core Components.
  • User Identity and Anonymity in the Metaverse.
  • Transparency and Accountability in Metaverse Data Processing.
  • Cross-Platform Data Sharing and Joint Controllership.
  • Empowering Data Subjects: Exercising Rights in Immersive Virtual Worlds.

They received comments from discussants  Eleni KOSTA (Full Professor of Technology Law and Human Rights at the Tilburg Institute for Law, Technology and Society of Tilburg University) and Gianclaudio MALGIERI (Associate Professor of Law & Technology at Leiden University).

The webinar was moderated by Aurelio LÓPEZ-TARRUELLA (Associate Professor Private international law, University of Alicante and Director of the MetaverseUA Chair) as part of the research activities organized by the MetaverseUA Chair on legal and ethical questions of the metaverse for the purpose of promoting its responsible development.
